Tax litigation

We are a dedicated team of tax litigation specialists handling all aspects of direct and indirect tax disputes with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). We are based in London and our backgrounds are varied including major city law firms, top accountancy practices and HMRC. The team works closely with the tax teams at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP to provide advice and assistance on appeals to the Tax Tribunals. We also work regularly with tax colleagues to advise on dispute resolution tactics and are part of a wider PwC tax disputes service.

We guide clients through the various remedies available in the civil courts process, representing clients in cases before the High Court through to the European Court of Justice. We have a particular expertise in relation to claims made against HMRC for breach of European law.

We work for a wide range of clients, including those in the finance, retail, leisure and banking sectors. Our team includes qualified lawyers, chartered accountants and chartered tax advisers. We are experienced at handling group actions and regularly bring clients together to conduct tax challenges in a cost effective way. Our multi-disciplinary approach provides a unique perspective on disputes with HMRC.

The merger of Revenue and Customs has resulted in a greater emphasis on anti-avoidance, which has increased the possibility of litigation. That, together with the Litigation and Settlement Strategy and the need to close the tax gap, has meant that the chance of a taxpayer facing a dispute with HMRC is higher than ever before.
