Company secretarial trainee

Training contract

Company secretarial trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the company secretarial business over a three year period. Initially you will focus on learning the basics of Companies Act compliance giving you a sound basis for developing a wider knowledge of company secretarial advisory areas such as share capital reorganisations for private companies and advice on governance and compliance for listed companies. There is also opportunity for you to get involved in project management and delivery of large multi-territory compliance jobs.

We look for ambitious, motivated graduates with a good degree in any discipline but often with a background in law or business. We believe in working hard as part of a team, and above all, enjoying what we do. We are a social firm with regular monthly drinks and a football and netball team who take part in regular matches.

Practical experience

You will be allocated your own portfolio of companies at an early stage, giving you a high level of exposure to clients from the start. During your training contract you will work with all members of the company secretarial team from the director through to consultants, allowing you to benefit from the experience of the whole team. We believe in a hands on approach and you will have opportunity to liaise with a range of people including finance directors, company secretaries and lawyers. There are also opportunities for secondments to clients and also to work with PricewaterhouseCoopers on larger projects for mutual clients, giving you great all round experience.

Mentoring programme

Upon joining the firm you will be allocated a buddy who will be another assistant consultant who is also undertaking their training contract. Your buddy will support you during your early days and be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.

Your supervisor

You will be allocated a manager who will support you throughout your training contract. They will monitor your work and ensure that you gain a wide range of experience.

Appraisals

Upon joining the firm you will work with your manager to set a range of objectives covering personal development and technical and assignment management skills. You will receive twice yearly formal appraisals to monitor your progress and also give you the opportunity to provide your own feedback.  We also encourage an environment of constant feedback and dialogue between yourself and your manager.

Training and skill development

Your formal training will be the ICSA qualification that you will study for by correspondence course via Campbell’s College. You will be given study leave to complete your exams with a discretionary bonus on successful qualification with first time passes. The combination of the ICSA qualification and the practical experience on the job will provide you with great experience to prepare you for your career as a chartered secretary. You will also receive internal training in softer skills and also specific in-house company secretarial technical training sessions run for the team as a whole.

Long-term prospects

On completion of your training contract your career progression to the consultant grade will be discussed with you. There is opportunity to express your interest in a particular area of the business and we will do our best to accommodate this in line with business needs. As a consultant we would continue to offer exposure to a wide range of client work and there is also continued emphasis on training, in particular on softer skills to complement the technical knowledge you have already gained. Your responsibility for client relationships would naturally increase with your progression as would your opportunity to develop business development skills.
